I’ve played some interesting roles in the past 2+ years of being in business. I have been a social media manager where I have created social media content for coaches and creatives who wanted to outsource that part of their business. I have also been a social media mentor where I have coached and trained coaches and creatives how to do their own social media. Then I went and hired my own social media assistants who helped and supported me in managing social media for me and my clients (you can read about that here). And finally, I created an online program where I taught coaches and creatives how to plan, create and manage their own social media in a really sacred way. So it is with these four different experiences in mind that I write this blog post where I talk about why I think you should learn to manage your social media before outsourcing it.
Before I start, I want you to know that I don’t believe there is a right or wrong way to manage your social media. You can outsource it or you can manage it yourself, whatever works for you! But if you’re going to outsource then I do believe that it’s worth learning a few things before you do it. And here is why...
You can’t outsource your legacy
In Sacred Social, I talk about the difference between using social media for your business and using social media on a personal level. For example, we use social media in our business to create brand awareness, build trust with our soul tribe and promote our offerings to an ever-expanding audience. But on a personal level, we can use social media to express our deepest truths, be seen for who we really are and build a community of people who inspire and energise us (you can read about my own personal social media journey here).
This doesn’t mean we have to keep the business and the personal separate. It just means that the businesses that we create and the content that we share on social media also nourishes us on a personal level. And this is what I call creating a legacy with your business and social media!
So are you using social media purely for business? Or are you aspiring to do it on a deeper, more personal level? Are you creating a legacy?
Most of the women that I work with are creating a legacy. They're not just out to make money but they want to make an impact too. And the thing about using social media to make an impact and build your legacy is… you can’t outsource it!
Nobody else has had the same experiences as you.
Nobody else can speak your truth for you.
And nobody else can create your legacy for you.
So if your goal is to use social media to create a legacy in the world then you can’t just outsource it… and I doubt that you will want to!
You can definitely still get support but I do think it’s important to empower and educate yourself in social media so that you can ensure your legacy is being seen (and making the impact that you most desire).

Nobody else can dream quite like you
You know those big dreams and goals that you have for your business and social media? You know all of those ideas and inspirations that you catch at random times of the day when you’re doing the dishes or half way through rinsing the shampoo from your hair in the shower? You know the passion that bubbles within you every time you think of your business?
Well nobody can hold those visions, ideas, inspirations and passions quite like you do. And when you’re using social media, connecting with your soul tribe and sharing those business visions with the world then you want it to come from that deep place within you. Because that place is powerful. That place is magnetic. That place is potent. It’s the place where the magic happens!
So instead of outsourcing your dreams to someone else, why not invest in yourself? Why not invest in the learning that will help those dreams come true? You can learn the skills. You can get the tools. You can implement the strategies. But no-one else can hold your dreams for you!

You’re the inspiration!
When I worked as a social media manager, I worked really hard to set up systems and processes that allowed me to gather as much content and wisdom from my clients as I could. You see, I never felt like it was a good idea to write their captions for them (especially as I worked with such heart-centred, unique and inspiring women). Instead, I tried to encourage them to write their own content and I repurposed that on social media. For example, my clients wrote blog posts and newsletters that I could repurpose as smaller social media posts. They created opt-ins and e-Courses and webinars that I used for inspiration. They even pinned quotes to Pinterest or shared an Asana project where they’d write their monthly musings to me. And the reason that we did this was not because I didn’t like writing captions or I didn’t know what to say. It’s because I was aware that they were the inspiration, not me!
And that’s the thing: you are the inspiration for your social media and no-one else can be that for you. So even if you’re outsourcing your social media, it’s worth learning how to write your own inspiring content!

You’ve got the goods
Can I tell you a little insider secret about the work that I do? I don’t know anything about social media that you couldn't easily learn and implement for yourself. I want you to go back and read that sentence again… it’s important. Because I think a lot of the messages around social media are disempowering!
They tell you that it’s really hard to manage your own social media…
That you need some sort of magic strategy in order to make an impact…
And that you need to be a social media superstar in order to have a successful business...
But let me tell you, it’s not true. You’ve already got all the goods. Nobody knows your business quite like you do and all of that social media stuff… you can learn that yourself. You don’t need some social media hot shot to implement a strategy for you. You’ve got this and you can do it!
